Does Tattoo Removal Hurt?

Many people ask us, “Does tattoo removal hurt?”  Our answer is usually that it hurts much less than getting the tattoo in the first place!  In all honesty, tattoo removal does not have to hurt at all.  At Schweiger Dermatology, we utilize painless tattoo removal, in order to provide the best experience for all of our patients.

Upon arriving in the office for your tattoo removal visit, we will clean your skin and provide numbing to the area being treated.  For most people, this entails a series of very tiny injections of numbing medication.  This process works instantly and provides the best anesthetic (numbing) effect for laser tattoo removal.  In some circumstances, we would instead use a topical numbing cream.  Topical numbing creams take approximately 45 minutes to one hour to fully work, after which time you will feel only dull sensations over the area being treated.

During the laser tattoo removal treatment, you will not feel any pain.  After the treatment is complete, we will review the post-treatment instructions for skin care and apply a clean dressing to the area.  Most people feel no pain following the tattoo removal treatment, but for patients experiencing soreness on the treated area, Tylenol may be taken or an ice pack applied to the treatment site.  These measures are nearly always sufficient to get rid of any mild soreness after the visit.
