How to Care for Your Skin After Tattoo Removal

It is important to properly care for your skin after tattoo removal treatments.  The treated area must be treated gently, in a manner that promotes healing of the skin.  Prior to leaving the office after your tattoo removal appointment, we will review our post-treatment handout with you and discuss instructions for skin care on the treated area.

It is important to keep the treated site moist after tattoo removal.  We recommend applying Aquaphor® or Vasoline® several times each day until the skin heals.  This process typically lasts for five to seven days.  During this time, you should cover the ointment with a Band-Aid or non-stick pad.  It is important, particularly during the first 48 hours following the treatment that the treated area stays moist and does not dry out.  Showering is okay following laser tattoo removal treatment, but we recommend refraining from scrubbing the area while showering.  Any mild discomfort in the days immediately following the treatment can be addressed with OTC Tylenol or Ibuprofen.  It is important to avoid picking or scratching at the treated area as it heals.

Most patients find that their skin heals completely in 14-21 days.  Over the following weeks, the tattoo will begin to look foggy and fade.  For most patients, 20% fading of the tattoo after each treatment is normal.  Since we do not know the exact composition of every tattoo, every patient will respond differently.
